Jul 22 Vets night dive

I met with my ex-NAUI classmates around 7pm and walked in a bit after 8pm. Surf was low, 1ft+ with mild wind. When the swell comes in, the wave can reach chest height but they were slow rolling waves. So, getting in-and-out was very easy. Thermocline was at 26ft+. Very mild surge at 40ft but clear and calm at 60ft+. When we did our 3mins safety stop, there were a lot of “junks” floating around so I decided to turn off the dive light, lit up my compass and came in without light. At 15ft, the orange haze from the street light was bright enough for us to navigate. My buddy wanted to do a graduate ascent (hug the bottom) but I like to do my 3mins safety stop no matter where I dive. According to a DAN report I read a while back, doing a slow ascent back from a shore dive is not the same as doing the 3mins stop. Anyone has any thoughts on that?

Lots of octopus, saw 1 decorated crab, lots of flying crabs, saw a few spanish shawls but didn’t see any interesting nudibranchs. On our way to shore, we saw 2 baby thornbacks (~7in) and a 2ft halibut
